This month signals the ruby anniversary of Choice Housings’ Belle Bashford Court, a sheltered housing scheme in the heart of East Belfast. Tenants and staff joined in on the celebrations to mark 40 years since it opened its doors to people in the local community.

Situated about a mile from the centre of Belfast, Belle Bashford Court’s location provides convenient access to a range of local services and amenities including the Connswater Community Greenway. Made up of 50 self-contained bungalows, the scheme, which was named after former tenant, the late Annabelle Bashford, comprises 36, one-bedroom bungalows, 12 double bedroom bungalows, and a further 2, two-bedroom bungalows.

Belle Bashford Court is a lively community hub, hosting a weekly coffee morning where tenants can connect and socialize. The activity programme is also growing, with a games afternoon set to launch in the coming weeks. Residents also hold bi-monthly meetings, allowing them to discuss matters that are important to them, and agree on suggested changes or improvements.

Karen Galbraith, Choice Area Housing Officer, attended the celebration:

“It was an honour to be part of such a significant day in the history of Belle Bashford Court. This remarkable milestone is a testament to the passion, hard work, and dedication of the staff, along with the ongoing commitment of the tenants. Together, their efforts have enabled the scheme to thrive and continue moving forward.”

The origins of the scheme date back to the early days of The Troubles, when Annabelle –better known as Belle – began helping to secure housing for mixed-marriage couples and others displaced from their homes. Her efforts caught the attention of Butcher Housing, which later acquired a site in Belfast’s Swift Street area to provide safe accommodation.

Karen added:

"While continuing our mission to provide quality, affordable homes throughout the region, Choice remains equally dedicated to investing in our existing schemes. This ongoing investment supports the long-term sustainability of our housing, and milestones like this one reflect that strong commitment."
