A new community arts initiative, championed by Choice Housing and partners brought colour and creativity to the heart of Antrim this autumn.
The Antrim Community Mosaic project, which was officially unveiled last week, is the culmination of individual pieces of artwork developed by local residents and community groups, forming part of a large-scale mosaic artwork, displayed permanently at Castle Mall.
The initiative brought together tenants from Choice Housing schemes, local residents from the wider area and community groups who collaborated on a piece of artwork that would serve as a vibrant and enduring symbol of community pride, inclusion, and good relations.
Under the guidance of local artist, Mhairi McGhie, participants created their own individual tile which was then combined into a stunning large-scale mosaic artwork. Delivered in partnership with Antrim Community Fridge and Castle Mall, the project highlights Choice’s ongoing commitment to supporting community-led initiatives that promote good relations, wellbeing, and inclusion across Northern Ireland.
Mark Kent, Good Relations Officer with Choice said,
“It is fitting that this initiative is unveiled during Good Relations Week given its focus on creating positive relations through community cohesion and engagement. This project provided the opportunity for Choice tenants to take part in creative workshops alongside other residents and groups and through this they are part of a lasting public artwork, accessible to all in the heart of Antrim.
“This initiative not only leaves a lasting artistic legacy in Antrim but also reinforces the importance of shared spaces and shared experiences. It was great to see so many get involved and they should be proud of what they have delivered.”
The launch received support from the Department for Communities (DfC), and Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme that has its origins in the NI Executive Together: Building a United Community Strategy which reflects its commitment to improving community relations and continuing the journey towards a more united, and shared, society.
Fountain Hill, Antrim shared housing development is also supported by the Department for Communities and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and a potential investment of £2.1m will be invested in the scheme’s development and associated five-year Good Relations Plan.
A key element of the good relations work for shared housing developments is identifying the challenges local communities are facing and using this to develop tailored projects that support these areas.
This involves collaborating with residents, partners and other stakeholders to deliver beneficial community relations through the establishment of the Antrim Joint Advisory Group.
