At Choice, our tenants are at the heart of everything we do, it is through their actions that a real sense of community and social value is created every day.
These are the stories that bring our communities to life:
Dirk Lakeman is a tenant from Bangor and has become widely known across Choice for his passion for healthy living, his enthusiasm for bringing people together and his willingness to share his skills for the benefit of others.
He dedicates significant time into the Mersey Street Community Garden and his efforts stretch far beyond the flower beds. He actively involves tenants, families and schoolchildren, encouraging them to participate, share knowledge and enjoy the benefits of working together outdoors which has cultivated a culture of collaboration and community amongst people of all ages.
Dirk also dedicates his free time creating a monthly blog with Choice called, ‘Drop in with Dirk’. Within this blog he shares advice on healthy living and practical recipes made from homegrown produce, helping tenants create dinners that are healthy, affordable and accessible.
Dirks efforts are inspirational and remind us of the powerful impact tenants can have in shaping our communities.
Seamus McKenna, a tenant from Lurgan has taken an active and practical role within his sheltered living scheme, not only advocating for himself but also for those around him. Seamus regularly monitors the communal areas ensuring they remain clean, welcoming and free from health and safety concerns. His actions have helped create a safe and pleasant environment for all residents, particularly those who may have limited mobility or health issues.
Seamus has also been proactive in supporting elderly and vulnerable tenants by reporting repairs on their behalf through his Area Housing Officer. Through this advocacy, he has raised awareness of tenant needs and ensured that tenant voices are heard.
During the summer months, he brings tenants together by organising a small gardening club within the scheme. This group work encourages social interaction, reduces isolation and fosters a strong sense of community pride among residents.
Seamus has been described as someone who “holds the welfare of all tenants close to his heart,” reflecting the genuine care and selflessness behind his actions.
At Choice we are extremely lucky to have tenants like Dirk and Seamus, whose dedication, kindness and leadership continue to create lasting impact, strengthening our communities.
