Water saving week is running from 4th to 8th May 2026 and is a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of water and how we can use it more sustainably.
As part of their Sustainability & Energy Strategy, Choice has been considering ways in which they can promote water conservation and support tenants, staff and partners to take positive action!
Choice have been working with NI Water to review the amount of water used in communal areas across our housing schemes in order to identify areas for improvement. As part of the redevelopment of Choice’s Head Office in Belfast, Choice are aiming to achieve the BREEAM Excellent standard and are considering water saving measures which can be included to reduce future water usage.
Choice staff and tenants also recently met with NI Water to receive water butts and other water saving devices. It is hoped that one of these water butts will be installed at their housing scheme on Mersey Street, to support growing and gardening activities by local residents.
Choice are also pleased to be able to launch their new water saving leaflet, which is available to download below. This offers practical tips and advice, with contact details for further information or support.
Brian Rankin, Choice’s Sustainability & Energy Manager, commented:
“It has been great to be able to work with NI Water recently to get an idea of how much water may be used in communal parts of our buildings, and the ways in which we can reduce our impact on the environment and potentially save money.
We are extremely grateful for the support from NI Water and the gifts of water saving devices, which will be put to good use! Water can be taken for granted, especially in NI where we see it so often! We would encourage everyone to think about the small everyday changes we can make to conserve this precious resource, our new water saving leaflet will provide some helpful ideas!”
