Making small, everyday changes can lead to significant savings on energy bills while helping to reduce our environmental impact. One effective way to do this is by upgrading to LED lighting. These bulbs last up to five times longer than traditional halogen bulbs, produce the same amount of light, and use around 80% less power. Choice has been actively installing communal LED lighting across its schemes for several years, with these upgrades not only lowering electricity costs but also delivering brighter, better-quality lighting.
There are lots of simple actions you can take to deliver proven savings, with some examples below.

  • Turning off lights when rooms are not in use
  • Washing clothes at 30 degrees
  • Taking shorter showers
  • Ensuring radiators aren’t obstructed
  • Switching appliances off standby
  • Defrost your freezer regularly
  • Only fill a kettle with as much water as needed
  • Use air fryers, microwaves or slow cookers where appropriate, rather than a conventional oven

Implementing these small, smart changes furthers our collective goal of using less energy, reduces bills and carbon emissions, and makes our homes and communities more sustainable.

As Northern Ireland’s 25th Energy Saving Week draws to a close we would encourage all our tenants and stakeholders to consider any changes they can make. Choice are committed to reducing our impact on the environment and delivering cost savings for our tenants, and have recently launched our new Sustainability & Energy Strategy to provide direction to 2028, which is again available to view on our website.
